My Birthday Episode – Hawker’s Cuisine, Northbrigde

The worse thing happened… I lost my camera! During the busy Christmas period it must have dropped out of my bag =( My wonderful boyfriend bought me a new one for my birthday so I’ve found my fire again.

Since my birthday falls on Valentines Day, most places have a set menu so I went with Hawkers. Hawkers has got to be my favourite late night eatery in Perth. Their signature Marmite sauce is to die for, their Malaysian and Chinese menu variety is insane and their drinks are the best around.

Singapore Chilli Crab seasonal price $90.00 per kilo

Hawker's Cuisine Singapore Crab

This exceeded my expectations! It was better then some other chinese seafood restaurants I’ve tried it in Perth. The crab was crispy from the prefrying and the meat was so sweet. The sauce was perfectly sweet, tangy and chilli. I wish there was more!

My Plate of Singapore Crab and Mantou

Hawker's Cuisine My Plate of Singapore Crab

It’s my birthday so I get to have a claw! Normally the claws are reserved for the parentals as a sign of respect… and so you don’t look like a fatty.

Side of Mantou’s 3 pieces for $3.00

Hawker's Cuisine Fried Mantou

So crispy and golden. Even though the menu says three pieces, you actually get six pieces because they cut it in half. Win.

“Superior” Crab with E Fu Noodles $90.00 per kilo

Hawker's Cuisine "Superior" Crab with E Fu Noodles

I was greedy and felt like more crab! I chose a more tradition sauce to please the parents, which was their Superior sauce. A blend of onion and herb thick sauce with E Fu noodles to soak the sauce and emphasis on the natural flavour of the crab. It was really enjoyable but I could not get over the flavour explosion from the Singapore Crab.

The Famous Marmite Chicken $16.00

Hawker's Cuisine Marmite Chicken

This is the dish that made my fall in love with Marmite. The chicken is first lightly deep fried and then stir fried with their sweet and salty marmite sauce.

Pork Belly with Mui Choy $18.00

Hawker's Cuisine Mui Choy Pork Belly

If anyone has a good recipe for this I would love to see it. Twice cooked pork belly in a pool of gravy goodness. The pork is first fried to give the skin the crispy and dark colour. Then the flavours of the preserved vegetables add a saltiness to the dish.

Steamed Toothfish with Radish Sauce $24.80

Hawker's Cuisine Steamed Tooth Fish with Radish Sauce

The flaky fish melts in your mouth and then you taste the lovely oily soy sauce and bits of crunchy radish bits.

Jiang Bao Spare Ribs $16.00

Hawker's Cuisine Jiang Bao Spare Ribs

This was my least favourite dish of the night, deep fried spare ribs in a garlic Jiang Bao sauce which was very similar to sweet and sour. Still nice but there are better dishes on the menu.

Hawker’s Specialised Drinks

Hawker's Cuisine Drinks

From left to right. Iced Milo with Condense milk $4.00, Iced Ribena with Lemon $4.00, three layer Teh Peng $4.00, Teh Peng $4.00.

The Cake Factory Grand Marnier Birthday Cake $25.00

The Cake Factory Grand Marnier Birthday Cake

Vanilla sponge soaked with Grand Marnier, filled with custard, white chocolate mousse and fresh strawberries decorated with roasted almonds, strawberries and chocolate hearts which was a valentines day touch. The cake was very moist inside and the cream was amazing as always. The Cake Factory makes the best cupcakes I’ve had in Perth yet.

Low and Slow Ribs Episode Featuring the new Weber Performer

I got my boyfriend the Weber Performer for his birthday and we finally got the chance to christen it now the weather has cleared up. We decided to cook low and slow pork ribs, cheese and bacon chicken wings and home made crunchy fries.

We woke up early Sunday morning, excited as if it were Christmas morning, just to start up the BBQ. The Weber Performer has a ‘Touch-N-Go’ feature which uses gas to ignite coal at the push of a button . I now call it magic. No more fire starters. No more inconsistent coal temperature, no more wasted time guessing how long till the coals heat up. Just use the gas ignition for 5 minutes, and then let your coal heat up for around another 10mins and you’re ready to go. My bacon sense are telling me I’ll be having BBQ’s more often this summer.

Smokey Low and Slow Ribs

Smokey Sticky Ribs

My Bf does all the cooking on the BBQ… I wondering if I should start calling him BBQ Boy?

He asked the butcher to cut the ribs in to small piece so we end up with jerky type rib pieces. It ended up taking 8 hours to cook at about 125-150 C for a low and slow approach.

From memory our spice rub marinade consisted of cayenne pepper, paprika, garlic and onion powder, dried basil, chilli powder mustard powder, salt and black pepper.

In the last couple of hours of cooking, we started to base of ribs with a special BBQ rib sauce and in the last half hour we smothered the ribs with a layer of honey.

Sticky Saucy Ribs

Sticky Sauce Ribs

The crust of the meat was jerky like, the inside was tender, and the sauce was sticky, icking, finger licking good.

And Bacon Strips

And Bacon Strips

I just had to take a picture of these glistening smoked bacon strips which have been flavouring the chicken wings on the BBQ. We needed to chop these into bits and scatter them on top of the chicken wings with some cheese. However half the bacon may or may not have been eaten in the process.

Cheesy Bacon Chicken Wings

Cheese and Bacon Wings

Our Bacon and Cheese Chicken Wings recipe is from BBQ Pit Boys.

We actually found american buffalo wing sauce at our local IGA. We mixed the buffalo sauce with butter for dipping the wings into as suggested.

Mountain of Fries

Mountain of Home Made Fries

My contribution for the day was a side. I went for french fries and wanted to make them from scratch to be fancy smancy.

My Macca’s Style Home Made French Fries

Maccas Style Home Made French Fries

Served with Perinaise and holy aoili.

I followed the video on youtube for Heston’s recipe for the chips, but altered the timing as his chips are thick and my french fries and thin and crispy. I brought 3kg of potatoes and there was not a single french fry left over.

Cooking Mama China ‘s Salad

Salad

Cooking Mama China whipped up a side salad within minutes. Rocket, tomatos and bocconcini with a balsamic dressing.

My Plate

Ribs, Cheese and Bacon Wings, Fries and Salad

Yes we used thali plates to mix things up a bit. Ribs, wings and chips is probably one of the best meals ever.

Dessert

Cheesecake and Macaron

Dessert was provide be Foodie Cravings and she made macarons! The macaron was delicious and the chocolate filling was addictive. I’m glad they turned out bigger then expected ; ) I was pleasently surprised to find out they were made from the Donna Hay Macaron Mix!

The second dessert was a Flake Cheesecake.

Harry’s Bar Northbridge – RIB n’ WING NIGHT!

It’s winter time and my diet is once again out the window. My boyfriend called me up and the conversation went a little something like this:

Bf “Hey, you going to the gym tonight?”

Me “Yeah I am planning to, why?”

Bf “Want to go rib night at Harry’s Bar instead?”

Me “Yes, why yes I do.”

Bf “Oh cool, cause I booked us a table already.”

Harry’s Bar is on Francis Street in Northbridge and they have some of the best deals in town. Tuesday is $12 Pizza and Pint Night, Thursday is Beat the Meat Night where you can get a 400g ribeye for $20! and my favourite is Wednesday Rib n’ Wings Night. More info is on their website.

Ribs and Wing’s Night means insetead of paying the usual $26 for a serving of their Ribs n’ Wings including home coleslaw and a baked potato, you pay $19.90 for the first serve and then $2.50 after that for refills!

Harry’s Bar Menu

Harry's Bar Menu

We didn’t need to look at their menu since we came just for the ribs, but their bar menu features a lot of cocktails.

Harry’s Bar Setting

Harry's Bar

The restaurant area has many private booths instead of the usual dining tables creating a nice and cosy setting.

Harry’s Bar Ribs n’ Wings Round 1 Hidden Wings

Harry's Bar Ribs n' Wings Round 1

The first massive plate of their fall off the bone ribs. The ribs are very tender, saucy and it’s got some nice spices in the marinade. They give you a mix of the pork rib pieces. They are all so good!

The home slaw is very tangy and crunchy. The potato in loaded with sour cream and then topped with cheese.

Harry’s Bar Ribs n’ Wings Round 1

Harry's Bar Rib n' Wing Night Round 1

I found my wings underneath the layers of ribs. The wings are just as nice. Again marinated beautifully, then charred and then smothered in sauce all over again.

While the waitress clears your plate she asks and temps you with another a refill.

Round 2 My Serving

Harry's Bar Rib n' Wings Night Round 2

This is my second serving. I choose the plate with more bone pieces since I love tucking into boney rib pieces.

Round 2 Bf’s plate

Harry's Bar Rib n' Wing Night Round 2

This is my bf’s second plate.

Round 3

Harry's Bar Rib n' Wing Night Round 3

I won by making it to round 3. Each round tasted better then the next, but my stomach was slowly feeling like it was about to explode. Worth it!

Harry’s Bar Mocktail $5.00 approx

Harry's Bar Mocktail

I asked the waitress if they could make up a mocktail since they was nothing on the menu except for cocktails. I was pleasently surprised with she told me it would only be $5.00! Usually people can charge anything up to $10.00.

Mocktail with a Hidden Cherry

Harry's Bar Mocktail with a Cherry on top

Then I found the cherry at the bottom of my drink, what a way to top off my night!

The atmosphere here is laid back and the staff are very tentative. This a great place to take your friends if you are ever stuck for ideas.

Ria Leederville

Roti quest yet again! I was expecting a posh, average restaurant since it’s situated in Leederville, however I was pleasantly surprised with my dining experience here. It’s not the most authentic Malaysian restaurant around, but it’s pretty tasty.

Ria Menu

Ria Menu

A very nice and cosy setting.

Ria Roti with Satay Sauce $2.50 each

Ria Roti with Satay Sauce

The roti was crispy and crackling as you break into it. It tasted amazing but I can’t help but think they are the frozen one’s you get at the asian supermarkets. Either way they went swimmingly with the satay sauce.

They offer any sauce that accompany any of the starter dishes for you to dip your roti.

Ria’s Pork Rib Nibbles $15.50

Ria Pork Rib Nibbles

These was fantastic. I could have eaten a kilo of these. The marinade was very sweet and you can taste the nice crust of herbs with every bite.

Ria Nyonya Chicken Curry $20.50

Ria Nyonya Chicken Curry

This was not a authetic Malaysian curry, but it’s still good! The spices in it are nice, it’s rich, hot and had big pieces of tender chicken.

It was a lovely meal with great service. I will definately come back to try other dishes on the menu.
