Ha-Lu, Mount Hawthorn

Ha-lu is a great Japanese fusion restaurant for not only dine-in but take away as well. I was so impressed the first time I went, I returned twice in one weekend. Here’s a combined post on the times visited recently including a very special birthday for Foodie Cravings.

Sashimi of the Day $18.00 Salmon, Tuna and Kingfish

Ha-Lu Sashimi of the Day

Thick cut fresh slippery slices of fish to start.

Crumbed Camembert Cheese $9.80

Ha-Lu Crumbed Camembert Cheese

These deep fried wedges of soft cheese oozes into your mouth with the tang of some lemon and their delicious blueberry jam like sauce. It is served with cute skinless honey cherry tomatoes.

Ebi-Mayo $17.00

Ha-Lu Ebi Mayo

This was one of those dishes where the table next to us had to lean over just to ask what it was because it looked that attractive! Plump juicy prawns tossed in their own concoction of mayo cocktail sauce and was barely contained in a deep fried wanton parcel.

But wait theres more!

Ha-Lu Ebi Mayo Innards

Once cracked open… a poached runny egg streams over a refreshing avocado salad. It was amazing.

Scallop Nanban $18.00

Ha-Lu Scallop Nanban

These fat scallops are only lightly deep fried and inside they are still a little raw. Some people, myself included, who don’t like raw seafood might be put off this dish. Having said that I still enjoyed these because the scallops themself were so bitey and fresh that I could overlook the fact it was still raw.

Close up of Scallop Nanban $18.00

Ha-Lu Scallop Nanban Close Up

The fried lotus root and julienned raw veggies on top complimented the scallops perfectly.

Oyster Kaki-Fry $18.00

Ha-Lu Fried Oysters with Ponzu Vinaigrette

Unlike most of their lightly fried dishes, this dish is a bit on the heavier side. The oysters are coated with a seasoned panko batter and is very crunchy. I would probably only order this if there are more than two people eating as I got quite full eating it.

Linley Valley Pork Belly “Kaku-ni” $16.00

Ha-Lu "Kaku-ni" Pork Belly

The blocks of slow cooked Linley Valley pork belly pulls apart with ease. The light soy jus goes great with the pork and soft boiled eggs. This is my favourite dish here.

Kingfish and Salmon Belly Nitsuke $18.00

Ha-Lu Kingfish and Salmon Belly with Daikon

Mmm did I ever tell you my favourite part of a fish is the belly and skin? These were a win being skin-on and deep fried belly pieces. The slow cooked daikon was very light and fluffy.

Succelent Terriyaki Chicken $13

Ha-Lu Teriyaki Chicken

Teriyaki chicken the way it should be. Crispy skin and a caramelised teriyaki sauce with additional mayonaise.

Grilled Miso Patagonian Toothfish $18.00

Ha-Lu Toothfish

The toothfish was flakey and soft and lightly grilled with miso flavour.

Duck, Aubergine, Madeira sauce with Wholegrain Mustard $24.00

Ha-Lu Duck Augergine Madeira Sauce

My second favourite dish here. The skin of the duck is crunchy with a smokey flavour. The meat of the duck, cooked to a medium rare is very tender. The sauce madeira-tamari together with the duck was out of this world and even though I do not like aubergine or the hint of mustard powder I still enjoyed this dish to the fullest.

Ginger Linley Valley Pork $22.00

Ha-Lu Ginger Linley Valley Pork with Fried Pumpkin

I was actually confused when this dish came out as I was sure she said pork, but when I tasted it, the texture was completely different to what pork usually tastes like. The pork had no dryness… so not only have they managed to make it taste delicious but they made it extra juicy. Not only are they chefs but wizards too.

Premium Beef “Ishi-yaki” Grill with Fried Onions $32 Margeret River Wagyu D-Rump

Ha-Lu Stonegrill "Ishi Yaki" Wagyu Beef

The wagyu rump is served in a stonepot so you can cook your beef to your liking and the fried onions become a chip like side.

Side Ramen $8.00

Ha-Lu Ramen

The tiny knob of butter melts into your broth and the slurpy ramen made me wish I had ordered this to myself.

Miso Soup $2.50, Rice $2.50

Ha-Lu Miso Soup and Rice

White Chocolate, Roasted Tea and Berry Pannacotta & Ume Plum Gelee $9.50

Ha-Lu Panacotta

This dessert was light and not overly sweet.

Baked Cheesecake with a hint of Azuki $9.50

Ha-Lu Baked Cheesecake

This was not a traditional cheesecake. It was more like a soft, warm cloud of yumminess. Bites of berries and sesame ice cream to add to the experience.

Tea for Two $4.00

Ha-Lu Green Tea

Teriyaki Chicken Bento $16.00

Ha-Lu Teriyaki Chicken Bento

All their bento’s come with two croquettes, japanese omelette, kara-age chicken, mushroom salad and rice. The Kara-age chicken was a bit cold in mine but it was still tasty.

Beef Tataki Bento $20.00

Ha-Lu Wagyu Beef Tataki Bento

Pork Belly Bento $26.00

Ha-Lu Pork Belly Kaku-ni Bento

The staff here are very helpful and the food comes out quickly. The takeaway wait time is a little bit longer at around 20 minutes, but it’s worth the wait.

Girl’s Night Episode with Chocolate Fountain

Girl’s Night! I agreed to take my sister out clubbing for the first time and I made sure to make pre-drinks a bit special.

Tasting Plate

Chorizo, Cheese with Turkish Bread

I made a tasting plate of chorizo sausages, cheese cubes, turkish bread and chilli, basil infused olive oil.

Bacon Cheezels

Bacon Cheezels

I found my new favourite chips. I already love Cheezels, but now even more since they brought out the bacon flavour. You still get the crunchy, corny, cheesiness of regular Cheezels, but now in the shape of a mini bacon strip and tastes like bacon too!

Pink Glasses with Bacon Cheezels

Pink Glasses

I found cool pink glasses and to the right, a bowl of the bacon Cheezels.

Chocolate Fountain with a dipped Cherry

Chocolate Fountain Dipped Cherry

These chocolate fountain machines are great fun. A dipped cherry can be seen oozing with chocolate, and you can also see the top of the churros I made.

Accompaniments for the Chocolate Fountain

Chocolate Fountain Accompaniments

I made Churros for the first time. Super easy, cheap and tasty. Recipe here. Sorry for the lack of photography… I guess I’ll just have to do it again ; )

Also on the plate are fresh strawberries, cherries, mangos, pineapples, marshmellows and jelly filled red lollies.

Toblerone Cocktail

Toblerone Cocktail

No girl’s night would be complete without cocktails… our flavour of choice for the night was Toblerone.

After drizzling the chocolate sauce in swirls in to the cocktail glasses (from the chocolate fountain I might add), we blended one tablespoon of Kahlua, Frangelico, Baileys, White Creme de Cacao and four tablespoons of cream with ice. Then topped it off with crushed Toblerone and a chocolate waffle stick.

Thanks to MzTiff for helping with this one.

Lychee Cocktail

Lychee Cocktail

No idea what went into these, it had lychee, it was sweet. That is all.

Low and Slow Ribs Episode Featuring the new Weber Performer

I got my boyfriend the Weber Performer for his birthday and we finally got the chance to christen it now the weather has cleared up. We decided to cook low and slow pork ribs, cheese and bacon chicken wings and home made crunchy fries.

We woke up early Sunday morning, excited as if it were Christmas morning, just to start up the BBQ. The Weber Performer has a ‘Touch-N-Go’ feature which uses gas to ignite coal at the push of a button . I now call it magic. No more fire starters. No more inconsistent coal temperature, no more wasted time guessing how long till the coals heat up. Just use the gas ignition for 5 minutes, and then let your coal heat up for around another 10mins and you’re ready to go. My bacon sense are telling me I’ll be having BBQ’s more often this summer.

Smokey Low and Slow Ribs

Smokey Sticky Ribs

My Bf does all the cooking on the BBQ… I wondering if I should start calling him BBQ Boy?

He asked the butcher to cut the ribs in to small piece so we end up with jerky type rib pieces. It ended up taking 8 hours to cook at about 125-150 C for a low and slow approach.

From memory our spice rub marinade consisted of cayenne pepper, paprika, garlic and onion powder, dried basil, chilli powder mustard powder, salt and black pepper.

In the last couple of hours of cooking, we started to base of ribs with a special BBQ rib sauce and in the last half hour we smothered the ribs with a layer of honey.

Sticky Saucy Ribs

Sticky Sauce Ribs

The crust of the meat was jerky like, the inside was tender, and the sauce was sticky, icking, finger licking good.

And Bacon Strips

And Bacon Strips

I just had to take a picture of these glistening smoked bacon strips which have been flavouring the chicken wings on the BBQ. We needed to chop these into bits and scatter them on top of the chicken wings with some cheese. However half the bacon may or may not have been eaten in the process.

Cheesy Bacon Chicken Wings

Cheese and Bacon Wings

Our Bacon and Cheese Chicken Wings recipe is from BBQ Pit Boys.

We actually found american buffalo wing sauce at our local IGA. We mixed the buffalo sauce with butter for dipping the wings into as suggested.

Mountain of Fries

Mountain of Home Made Fries

My contribution for the day was a side. I went for french fries and wanted to make them from scratch to be fancy smancy.

My Macca’s Style Home Made French Fries

Maccas Style Home Made French Fries

Served with Perinaise and holy aoili.

I followed the video on youtube for Heston’s recipe for the chips, but altered the timing as his chips are thick and my french fries and thin and crispy. I brought 3kg of potatoes and there was not a single french fry left over.

Cooking Mama China ‘s Salad

Salad

Cooking Mama China whipped up a side salad within minutes. Rocket, tomatos and bocconcini with a balsamic dressing.

My Plate

Ribs, Cheese and Bacon Wings, Fries and Salad

Yes we used thali plates to mix things up a bit. Ribs, wings and chips is probably one of the best meals ever.

Dessert

Cheesecake and Macaron

Dessert was provide be Foodie Cravings and she made macarons! The macaron was delicious and the chocolate filling was addictive. I’m glad they turned out bigger then expected ; ) I was pleasently surprised to find out they were made from the Donna Hay Macaron Mix!

The second dessert was a Flake Cheesecake.

Fremantle Getaway Episode

When my boyfriend and I first started dating we wanted to go somewhere special where we would not bump into anyone. Fremantle provided us with the perfect haven for culture, adventure and most importantly… food. Every time we return here, not only do we get butterflies going to our usual haunts but we are also excited to try new places.

While waiting for a seat at Perth’s best ramen eatery, we decided to start our day with some coffee.

Hush Espresso Bar

Hush Espresso

The decor is very unique being a decked out heritage-listed property.

Inside Hush Espresso Bar

Hush Espresso Inside

Cappuccino $4.00 approx

Hush Espresso Mocha with Belgian Choc

This is our first time to Hush and this is the best looking coffee I’ve seen in Perth. The barista is very skilled, and the taste was simply amazing. The smoothest coffee with aromatic beans, the froth was very creamy down to the last sip.

Mocha with Belgian Chocolate $4.50 approx

Hush Espresso Cappuccino

Another thing I have been on the hunt for is a perfect mocha and this is my favourite so far. A shot of esspresso laced with bittersweet chocolate. It tasted like it was made with love like the loveheart would suggest.

Dosukoi Japanese Noodle House Menu

Dosukoi Japanese Noodle House Menu

This tiny noodle house is located inside the Freo Markets. There are only about a dozen items on the menu and by 2pm most of the dishes are sold out. You order, pay and then take a number and wait in line until they SMS you that there’s room for you to eat. The wait time is usually an hour and believe me it’s worth the wait.

The ramen is recommended to be eaten in house or else the texture of the noodles will go soft within five minutes and you won’t get the dish at it’s full potential. The ramen stock is either a delicious tonkotsu (pork) stock, or fish stock. Both have been cooked for many many hours resulting in a concentrated bodied soup.

Soft Pork Ramen $9.00 approx

Dosukoi Soft Pork Ramen

Soft and salty thin slices of pork belly in ramen with a swirly slice of fishcake, nori, spring onions and wood ear mushroom.

As always the soup is scorching hot and slurpingly delicious down to every bite.

Prawn Dumpling Ramen $9.00 approx

Dosukoi Prawn Gyoza

Like above but with crunchy pieces of prawn dumplings.

Dosukoi Japanese Noodle and Bubble Tea on Urbanspoon

We always forget after a full belly of ramen we feel like napping, however we waddled our way to explore what else was in Freo.

Freo Markets

Fremantle Markets Strawberies

As always there was a range of fresh fruit. What grabed my eyes were the vibrant Wanneroo strawberries and the USA cherries. After seeing such tasty looking strawberries we wanted to try some for dessert.

Chocolate dipped Strawberry Selection

Fremantle Markets Choc Strawberries

Chocolate coated strawberries with marshmellows are next on my list!

Choc coated Strawberries with Nuts $3.50

Fremantle Markets Choc Strawberries with Nuts

Mmm fresh and nutty.

Indian Snacks

Fremantle Markets Indian Snacks

Normally we like to snack at this joint. They do some Jester’s style pies with curry flavours like butter chicken.

Cupcakes

Fremantle Markets Cupcakes

A display of specialty cupcakes.

Take Home Pack $2 each

Fremantle Cupcakes

Maltesers, oreos, cherry ripe and chocolate with candy cupcakes.

Live Juice Fresh OJ

Fremantle Markets Fresh OJ

$5 for a cup of icy cold sweet OJ.

We then ventured outside the markets to our favourite Freo lolly store.

Lolly

Lolly Display Fremantle

I prefer this store rather then Roc Candy because the flavours are tastier and if you’re unsure of what to get, the very generous lady at the front gives you samples before you buy. Mixed bags are also available.

Lolly Fremantle

Bags, jars and lollypops available also.

Live White Fairy Statue

Fremantle Live Statue

Always good supporting the entertainers.

Storm Troopers

Fremantle Storm Trooper

Here’s something you don’t see everyday.

Red Spoon

Red Spoon Fremantle Frozen Yogurt

Low fat you say? I wonder how good it could taste.

Free Samples

Red Spoon Fremantle Samples

How convenient. I’m not a fan of frozen yogurt but this was amazing. No funny aftertaste in your mouth. The texture is like a soft serve and the yogurt flavours are seasonal. There was natural, chocolate and pear.

Toppings

Red Spoon Fremantle Toppings

Everything you can think of including fruits, sauces, chocolate bits and even caramel popcorn.

Premade Take Away Packs

Red Spoon Fremantle Pre-made Delights

Here’s one we prepared earlier.

Regular Cup $4.00 +2 Topping $5.00

Red Spoon Fremantle Natural Yogurt with Blueberries and Mango Sauce

My bf and I decided to choose a flavour each so we’d share one serving. He chose blueberries and I chose mango sauce. It was fruity and delicious.

Red Spoon on Urbanspoon

Since Fremantle is a half hour drive from where we live, we could not decide on where to have dinner. I felt like pizza and the Bf felt like burgers. We decided it we’d go to both and make each other happy.

My choice was pizza at Little Creatures Brewery, the BF chose Missy Moo’s Burger Bar.

Little Creatures Lemon Lime & Bitters

Little Creature's Brewery Lemon Lime & Bitters

My choice since I was driving. Even though I don’t drink I’ve heard that Little Creature’s Brewery is a must when in Freo because they serve some delicious pub grub.

Little Creatures Pale Ale

Little Creatures Brewery Fremantle Pale Ale

The BF’s beer.

Little Creatures Frites $9.00

Little Creatures Brewery Fremantle Frites

This big bowl of chips was demolished in record time. These skin on chips were crunchy and served with creamy aioli.

Little Creatures Pork and Italian Sausage Pizza with Fennel $16approx

Little Creatures Brewery Italian Sausage and Fennel

The pizza was amazing! The base was very thin and crispy.

Missy Moos Burger Bar

Missy Moo's Burger Bar

That little car toy is our table number. The decor in here very cute and friendly. Oragami is hanging from the ceiling, kids colouring pages on the countertop and an old school cocktail arcade cabinet in the corner.

Missy Moos Strawberry Milkshake $5.50

Missy Moo's Burger Bar Strawberry Milkshake

A very huge icy milkshake which I couldn’t finish no matter how hard I tried.

Missy Moos Tom, Tom and the Piper’s Wife $12.5 + $1.50 extra for caramelised onion.

Missy Moo's Burger Bar Tom Tom & The Pipers Wife

Lean juicy beef patty, crispy bacon, cheddar cheese, tom, baby spinach, BBQ sauce and aoili. No regrets about adding caramelised onion.

The bread was grilled on the outside for a perfect bite, the beef was premium quality and you could really taste it. An outstanding burger.

Missy Moos Chunky Chips $4.50

Missy Moo's Burger Bar Chunky Chips

We ordered the wrong size chips. Again, no matter how good the chips were, we could not finish them.

Thank goodness we do not live in Freo or I suspect I would never stop eating!

Jaws Mint East Perth

I love any restaurant that parades food in front of me such as dim sum, buffets and sushi trains. Jaws has the best sushi train around with a big selection of hot items, sushi and other unique dishes.

Jaws is in the Entertainment Book 2010/2011 and I saved $15 off my bill… that’s at least three plates for free! mmm….

Chicken Udon $6.50

Jaws Chicken Udon

The cheapest, best value for money udon around. My boyfriend’s mum use to come here just for the udon (which was only $5 back then).

The noodles are always slurping good, with some pieces of crab stick, chicken, and my favourite deep fried tempura bits which soak up the soup. Definitely my  favourite item on the menu.

Vege Tempura Nigiri $3.70

Jaws Vege Tempura Nigiri

The tempura vege includes carrot, potato and onions and it tasted really nice with the sushi rice.

Nigiri refers to sushi where there is an oval clump of rice down the bottom and miscellaneous ingredients on top. Cooked or uncooked.

Unagi (BBQ Eel) Nigiri $4.20

Jaws Unagi Nigiri

Those of you who have never tried eel, it tastes like a cross between fish and chicken. It was delicious as usual and I love that dark BBQ sauce it comes with.

Salmon Nigiri $4.20

Jaws Salmon Nirgiri

My boyfriend’s favourite dish.

Maguro (Tuna) Nigiri $4.20

Jaws Tuna Nigiri

What a lovely colour.

Aburi Salmon (Lightly Seared Salmon) Nigiri $4.20

Jaws Charred Salmon Nigiri

My boyfriend’s new favourite dish. This is the first time I’ve tried this and I love the burnt, charred flavour.

Salmon and Cheese Maki $4.90

Jaws Cheese and Salmon Maki

You will be surprised at how well cheese goes with sushi.

Maki means roll.

Tasmania Maki $4.20

Jaws Tasmanian Maki

Fresh salmon with avocado toped with chilli mayonnaise.

Prawn Tempura Maki $4.20

Jaws Tempura Prawn Maki

Amazing with the japanese mayonnaise on top and the crunchy tail bit at the end is so crispy.

Terriyaki Chicken $4.20

Jaws Teriyaki Chicken

The skin was crisp yet saucy at the same time.

Crab Balls $5.50

Jaws Crab Balls

My second favourite item on the menu, the first being the Udon. This deep fried crab ball is made up of stringy crab stick bits and is served with chilli mayonnaise. Why must I love all deep fried items so much?

Fried Japanese Oysters $5.50

Jaws Fried Japanese Oysters

Enough said.

Calamari Rings $4.20

Jaws Calamari Rings

Golden and hot. Always a winner.

Chilli Mayonnaise $0.60

Jaws Chilli Mayonnaise

A mixture of chilli sauce and japanese mayonnaise.

Creme Brulee $4.20

Jaws Creme Burlee

Extremely smooth and delicious creme brulee! Not overly sweet with a cracking sugar layer. I almost went for another serve.

The Jaw’s in East Perth in the Mint building is quite small so if you have a group of 6 or more be sure to come early to be able to sit together. They also do great takeaway packs and sashimi.

Rick Stein’s Food Blogger Competition Episode

Who wouldn’t want to see Rick Stein live on stage for his new upcoming Food Odyssey Tour? Lucky for me, he’s on the hunt for the best food blogger from each city to join him!

All you have to do is share a recipe that you interpret as truely Aussie.

It’s all brand new to me – this will be my first ever cooking competition. So I decided to make an Aussie classic.. a burger the lot with an asian twist.

Australia is a place where all cultures come together, and with that comes the fusion of ingredients from different countries into a dish for the greater good. That’s what I try to achieve with my Ultimate Aussie dish… LittleMissBacon’s Panko Prawn Sliders!

I included all the different things aussies love to eat into each burger such as prawns, pineapple, fresh produce and bacon (sorry guys I don’t like beetroot).

For the full recipe: Click here.

Australian X Large Green King Prawns

LMB Australian X Large Green King Prawns

I bought these on special at Woolworths for $19.90 a kilo.

Ingredients

LMB Panko Prawn Sliders Ingredients

Lawley’s Mini White Round Rolls

LMB Panko Prawn Sliders Mini Bread Rolls

Each roll is buttered and rubbed with garlic cloves and lightly toasted before serving. Lawley’s is a European-style bakery with many store locations across Perth.

Making the Prawn Paste

LMB Panko Prawn Sliders Prawn Paste

250g of prawns, 1 glove of garlic, 1 egg white, 1/2 tsp of sugar, 1/2 tsp sesame oil.

Making the Prawn Patties

LMB Panko Prawn Sliders Prawn Patties

Hand rolling the mini prawn patties.

Panko Coating the Prawn Patties

Deep Frying the Prawn Patties

LMB Panko Prawn Sliders Deep Fried Pattie

This deserves a heart smart tick of approval.

Prawn Pattie Innards

LMB Panko Prawn Sliders Pattie Innards

Must resist temptation to eat the crispy golden goodness right now!

Ever fried a Quail Egg?

LMB Panko Prawn Sliders Fried Quail Egg

Mini egg to fit in my mini sliders.

Presenting LittleMissBacon’s Panko Prawn Sliders

LMB Panko Prawn Sliders

In order: Prawn and Pineapple Slider, Prawn and Bacon Slider, Prawn and Cheese Slider, Prawn and Quail Egg Slider.

Innards with a Dizzle of Dynamite Sauce

LMB Panko Prawn Sliders Innards with Dynamite Sauce

Dynamite sauce is the perfect creamy sauce with a bit of a bite to it. It’s also the tastiest sauce known to man – simply mix japanese mayo/kewpie with sriracha chilli sauce.

My Slider the Lot

LMB Panko Prawn Sliders the lot

It was really hard to fit my whole mouth around this monstrosity but when I did, even I was surprised with the taste! Crispy salty bacon, sweet juicy pineapple, oozing egg yolk and then the star of the dish… the moist, bursty prawn patty. The bread really complimented the fillings, with it’s firm yet chewy soft consitency.  If you love prawns and burgers I highly recommend you give this a try.

I loved cooking this dish because it’s simple, only took just over an hour and it’s really versatile – everyone can accessorise their burger however they like. Last but not least, it was very rewarding… my family loved it and is already asking when I’ll cook it again!
