Sydney Eating Episode Day 4

My second last day and I felt like I was running out of time to eat as much of Sydney as I could. So I made sure it was a full blown day of eating. Brunch, dinner followed by late dinner.

Red Chilli Sichuan Chinatown Kung Pao Chicken $16.80

Red Chilli Sichuan Kung Pow Chicken

Deep fried chicken pieces with very hot dry chillis. This was loaded with chillis and flavour. It was fun digging out the chicken and each piece had a real kick to it.

This was my first experience of sichuan and it was hot, hot, hot! I’ve never experienced spiciness to the point where your mouth actually goes numb. My boyfriend and I were both sweating by the end of the meal. It was delicious don’t get me wrong, but I’m glad they offered a milky cold tea to easy the pain.

Red Chilli Restaurant Chinatown Peking Style Shredded Pork with Pancakes $16.80

This saucy and stringy pork is wrapped with the thin and soft pancakes.

Sydney Eating Episode Day 3

Day 3 started off with the breakfast of champions from Superbowl and finished off with the dinner of champions….  chinese banquet.

My Uncle and Aunty have been going to Emperor’s Garden Seafood for over a decade now and not only do they do delicious Dim Sum, they serve an epic chinese banquet.

Please excuse me for my lack of description and pricing as I was too involved with the family and the food…

Free Peanuts and Tea

Emperor's Tea and Nuts

Free salted nuts anyone?

Soup of the Day

Emperor's Soup

Most chinese restaurants will serve a nice and hearty soup for the first course. It a nice a light broth with bones and veggies or preserved veggies.

Steamed Oysters with XO Sauce  and BACON BITS

Emperor's Steamed XO Oysters

Steamed fresh, juicy fat oysters topped with garlic vermicelli in a XO sauce and sprinkled with bacon bits.

Steamed Ginger Oysters

Emperor's Steamed Ginger Oysters

A gentle ginger and soy combination topped with herbs.

2 kg of Lobster with E Fu Noodles

Emperor's Lobster with E Fu Noodles

This sauce was the bomb. It was loaded with butter, garlic and onions. With the lobster being quickly deep-fried first, the sauce is absorbs by the batter and the noodles.

My First Portion

Emperor's Lobster with E Fu Noodles

I’m the type of girl who spends her time picking out every lobster or crab leg for any traces of meat. I may get the shells all over myself by the end of it, but it’s worth it.

Fujian or Fukien Fried Rice

Emperor's Fujian or Fukien Fried Fried Rice

Ever feel like fried rice is a bit dry? Well the clever town of Fujian in China invented this dish. An asian-like gravy sauce filled with yummy bits of meat and vegetables underneath a bed of fried rice. This was my first exposure to this dish and I can’t help but wonder why I haven’t discovered it sooner.

Wasabi Beef

Emperor's Wasabi Beef

I’m not a fan of wasabi, however this dish was a treat. It was not overpowering like I expected and in fact the sauce only had a hint of wasabi. The beef was tender and perfect with mayo.

Steamed Whole Fish

Emperor's Steamed Fish

Always a winner.

Salt & Pepper Chilli Prawns

Emperor's Chilli Pepper Prawns

Another favourite.

Fruit Plate

Emperor's Fruit Plate

Complimentary Biscuits

Emperor's Complimentary Biscuits

Buttery- flakey biscuits.

More Complimentary Dessert?

Emperor's Tofu Fa

No complaints here! The Tofu Fa was really smooth and the sugar syrup was not too rich.

Sydney Eating Episode Day 2

Day two… I was blessed to have my Uncle and Aunty take my boyfriend and I around the tasty town of Cabramatta. The snacks, drinks and restaurants are embedded in my memory and if only there was such a thing a smell-a-blogging, you would understand why.

Dong Ba – Bun Bo Hue ( Spicy Beef and Pork Noodle Soup) $8.00

Dong Ba Bun Bo Hue

If you love Bun Bo Hue, there’s only one place to go for it in Sydney. Dong Ba. At any one of their branches you can hear slurping noises from all the happy customers as soon as you step into the store.

Bun Bo Hue is a Vietnamese noodle soup. The broth is mildly spicy, with flavours of lemongrass and other herbs. A good broth should be boiling for hours with bones, mainly beef.

Dong Ba’s Bun Bo Hue soup is so aromatic from the hours of stewing broth, and you can really tell by just looking at the colour of the broth. The toppings on their Bun Bo Hue include slices of pork, beef and Cha Lua.

Cha Lua is like a Vietnamese meatloaf or ham.

Condiments for Bun Bo Hue ( Spicy Beef and Pork Noodle Soup)

Dong Ba Condiments

The condiments which you can add to your soup includes lemon, beanshoots, lettuce, red cabbage and mint. Adding the condiments to your soup will give it a bit more texture and flavour.

Dong Ba – Bun Bo Hue ( Spicy Beef and Pork Noodle Soup) with Condiments

Dong Ba Bun Bo Hue with Condiments

The final result after adding some condiments and a bit of chilli. A balance of salty, sweet, sour and chilli with lots of meaty flavour. Simply amazing.

Dong Ba – Thit Bo Luc Lac (Shaking Beef) with Extra Fried Egg $10 approx.

Dong Ba Thit Bo Luc Lac with Fried Egg

Thit Bo Luc Lac is also known as ‘Shaking Beef’. It’s marinated cubes of beef served with red rice. I love this dish most when the beef is cooked to a perfect medium. I also love it with a fried egg.

The ‘Shaking’ refers to the cooking method which is shaking the wok as you cook the beef. That’s all.

Entry into Cabramatta

Cabramatta

Kaysone Sweets

Kaysone Sweets Snacks

Kaysone sweets specialise in anything from containers of snacks, honey toffee vegetable chips to drinks and shakes. A must stop not matter how full you are.

Honey and Toffee Vegetable Chips $4.00 for 100g

Kaysone Sweets Chips

My absolute favourite chips are the Taro Chips with Honey Toffee. The chips are kept warm and crispy, they are then covered with lashings of their honey toffee. It’s worth getting your hands sticky for.

Banana Sticky Rice $2.20

Kaysone Sweets Bananna Sticky Rice

I bought a Banana Sticky Rice with Coconut to take home since I couldn’t eat it all the time. When I got home it was still warm. The sticky rice was fragrant from being wrapped in the banana leaf and had a few charred marks which were delicious. Topped with coconut milk and crushed nuts this was a perfect dessert or snack!

Asian Drink Station

Drink Station Ingredients

There are a lot of places who have these stations all around Cabramatta. The idea is that you choose the ingredients you want, and they make a drink out of it.

My Boyfriend’s Shake

Asian Smoothie

He picked strawberry, jackfruit and mango, which is then blended with condensed milk, crushed ice and sugar.

Asian Dessert Drink

Your choice of 8 selections for $4.50, I chose Lychee, coconut cubes, jackfruit, omega 3 seeds and a mix of jellies. It is then topped with sugar syrup ,coconut milk and shaved ice.

Banh Kep (Coconut and Pandan Waffles) $1.50

Banh Kep Coconut and Pandan Waffles

My favourite flavour of waffles. Biting into the waffle, there’s strings of coconut in-between fluffy light batter.

Nem Nuong (Grilled Pork Skewers) $2 approx.

Nem Nuong

Don’t let the the pink colour throw you off. These lovely pork patties are like an asian rissole. Chewy, peppery and tasty.

More Custard Puffs $4 for Small $5 for Large

Puffs

I bought a small container.

Yellow Dragon Fruit $9.95 a kg

Yellow Dragon Fruit

I thought I’d better include a picture of a fruit to appear healthier.

Red Lea Hot Chicken

Red Lea Cabramatta

On one side of Red Lea they sell their  farm fresh poultry, and on the other side there are warmers of fried chicken, bbq roast chickens and other goodies. Kind of like a before and after shot.

Red Lea Warmer of Deep Fried Goodies

Red Lea Cabramatta Deep Fried Goodies

We shared a box of the spicy chicken chippies and they were amazing. In the background, a tray of chilli powder hot chips. If only I had a unlimited stomach space.

The Best Sign in the World

Red Lea Best Sign Ever

What more can a girl ask for?

Red Lea Fried Chicken

Red Lea Cabramatta Fried Chicken

The best thing about Red Lea is not only is the qaulity of the chicken and flavours amazing , but the pieces are separated so you choose exactly what you want! I’m a thigh girl myself.

Sydney Eating Episode Day 1

The time has finally come to visit my other home sweet home… Sydney! It was the first time my boyfriend has visited Sydney, so I was very excited to be his personal tour guide with the help of my local family members.

Most people plan out an itinerary, being a big foodie I had a ‘Food Itinerary’ and unfortunately, we could not cover the whole list.

Our hotel was located near Chinatown. It was only a two minute walk to Market City, where Wednesdays to Sundays, Paddy’s Markets are held on the bottom floor.

Entry to Chinatown

Sydney Chinatown

Oh what sweet childhood memories I have of this place…

Harry’s Cafe De Wheels Haymarket

Harry Cafe De Wheels Haymarket

I would give anything to have Harry’s Cafe De Wheels in Perth. The most perfect meal I can think of after a late night out. It opens till 4am on Fridays and Saturday nights!

WARNING: Bring a bib and handwipes… it gets very messy from here (drool included).

Menu

Harry Cafe De Wheels Haymarket Menu

I asked “What does the ‘Tiger’ stand for?”. The shop assistant said she’s not exactly sure but we decided it’s the concept of sauce, on top of mushies peas, on top of mash.

Harry’s Cafe De Wheels Famour Curry Tiger $5.90

Curry Tiger

Their famous curry pie with mash, mushy peas and thick brown gravy.

Hot Dog De Wheels

Hot Dog De Wheels

Their famous hot dog, with chilli corn carne, garlic onions, mushy peas, yummy cheese sauce and chilli sauce.

Y2K Fish Ball Station

Y2K Chilli Fish Balls

This dessert house is not only good for their variety of bubble tea flavours and desserts, but they also specialise in skewers. The skewers are perfect for snacking and my favourite is the ‘Chilli Fish Balls’. The fish balls are boiling in a huge pot so the flavour is seeped in and it’s steaming hot.

Chilli Fish Ball Skewer $3

Y2K Chilli Fish Balls

These fishballs had a bite to it. It tasted like a chilli-curry sauce and it was very juicy.

Meetfresh

Meetfresh Chinatown Signature

Meetfresh is a new Taiwanese dessert shop. There is a line out the door no matter what time or day you come and with one taste you will know why. What sets them apart from the rest is they hand make their taro balls with the fresh ingredients and no added preservatives.

Taro balls are similar to sago balls in texture. Sago balls, also known as ‘pearls’, are a starchy chewy ball commonly seen in bubble tea.

I find that some people may be put off by the gooey textures of sago balls and jellies found in asian desserts and drinks if it’s unfamiliar to them. It doesn’t help that I joke that sago balls come out of sago worms.

Meetfresh Signature Herbal Dessert with extra Noodle $5.5o plus 50c extra toppings Available Hot or Cold

Meetfresh Chinatown Signature Herbal Dessert

Grass jelly, taro balls, noodles.

Meetfresh Cafe Creme for all Grass Jelly Desserts

Meetfresh Chinatown Cafe Creme

This on it’s own did not taste like anything, but if desired when mixed through with the dessert gives a creamy taste.

Meetfresh Signature Herbal Dessert Innards

Meetfresh Chinatown Signature Herbal Dessert with Cafe Creme

Mix it all together with the bottom layer of brown sugar ice, to create an amazing dessert. The flavour of the handmade taro balls are to die for and the grass jelly is the best I’ve ever tasted.
