Mandurah Crab Fest 2011 Episode

You may have realised this weekend I’ve gone to two consecutive food fairs, one on Friday night and one on Saturday. Rest assured, I will be exercising all week to burn it off.

I’m always looking forward to a trip down to Mandurah. The seafood is great and it always feels like a mini getaway. When I heard there would be a Crabfest on last weekend, I was ecstatic.

The Mandurah Crabfest is a weekend showcase of crab, fresh produce, entertainment, promotions and more crab!

Sandcastle by Jenny Rossen

MCF Sandcastle 120311

Two truckloads of sand and water.

Kid’s Rides

MCF Kid's Rides 120311

It’s a very family orientated day and plenty of activities for kids everywhere like rides, drawing competitions and huge sandbox.

Smallgoods of the Riverland

MCF Salami 120311

I love free taste testing, especially when it’s this good. I ended up getting the Garlic German Mettwurst for $8.

Fudge Fusion $6.50

MCF Fudge Fusion 120311

We did not end up buying any fudge as we both could not finish the whole thing, but the sample of the Choc Fudge is very rich. I love it how the taste samples are individually wrapped.

Crab Shack Fresh Crabs

MCF Crab Shack 120311

The colour on the crab is so mesmerising. I wanted the whole box.

Crab Shack Singapore Crab Roll $12

MCF Crab Shack Singapore Crab 120311

This looked amazing and it tasted even better. The Singapore Chilli Sauce had some heat to it, but was well balanced with Garlic and Ginger. When cracking into the claws of the crab, the natural crab juices came oozing out and it was such a joy eating this. Blue Manna’s are small crabs so it means there is more work scooping out the flesh. When it tastes this good, it is time well spent.

Crab Shack Single Serve with Seafood Sauce $5

MCF Crab Shack Crab 120311

Mouthwatering fresh crab and a tantalising seafood sauce. Vinegar sauce was also available.

Portable Washing Basin

MCF Washing Basin 120311

I needed this as I had gotten crab everywhere.

IC’s Large Slushie $5

MCF IC's 120311

Blueberry, Tropical, Strawberry.

Olle’s Paella

MCF Giant Paella 120311

One giant, giant pan of Paella. Two flavours available. Crab and Chorizo or Chicken and Chorizo.

Ollie’s Crab and Chorizo Paella $12 with a drink

MCF Crab and Chorizo Paello 120311

This was my photo of the day. This is also the best Paella I’ve ever tasted. Succulent pieces of crab and chorizo balanced beautifully.

Ollie’s Crab and Chorizo Paella Burnt Bits

MCF Burnt Paella Bits 120311

The other thing I loved about this Paella is how much of that delicious burnt bottom bits is running through my rice.

Redmanna Waterfront Stand

MCF Redmanna Stall 120311

I love the Redmanna Waterfront Restaurant for their famous Seafood Tower.

Redmanna Sambucca Prawns with Chips $15

MCF Sambucca Prawns with Chips

The best creamy prawns. Although they only gave us six prawns, the sauce was to die for.

Redmanna Chilli Plum Crab with Jasmine Rice $15

MCF Redmanna Plum Crab 120311

The rice was gluggy and the sauce was not that great. Too sweet and too much ginger.

Dolphin Seafood Crab Roll $6

MCF Crab Roll 120311

Very stingy with the crab, and to my dismay they serve supermarket tartare sauce.

Frozen Delights Chocolate Coated Strawberries $4.50

MCF Frozen Strawberries

These frozen strawberries were a great way to cool down.

There was still a lot I wanted to fit in like a Crab Curry from Thai Palace and the Crab Fest Deluxe Pie from Miami Bakery. But there’s is always next time…

Twilight Hawker Market Episode

The Twilight Hawker Markets are running in the heart of the City every Friday night, 5pm-8pm during March. It’s set up on Murray Street. For more info see EatDrinkPerth.

Some of the stalls are those of the Carillon Food Court, others from catering companies and the rest are stores who want to get their names out. Great atmosphere, entertainment and variety. Try to come early to avoid queues and disappointment.

Dish Catering Paella

THM Big Paella Pan 110311

A big pan of Paella. Spiced rice with prawns, squid, mussels, capsicum and peas.

Paella Serving $10

THM Paella 110311

I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered it had chicken as well! My drumstick was hidden underneath the rice.

The Paella had one of the biggest lines and by 6pm, it had already sold out so you need to be early. The owner had a sign up afterwards saying,

“SORRY, SOLD OUT. Did 3X last week. Next time- A LOT MORE” At least they are sorry for those who missed out.

Marcelita’s Colombian Empanadas $3 each $10 for 3 plus sauce

THM Empanada's 110311

Made with gluten free maize flour, these soft pillows were a great snack. We had two Pulled Pork with Lime and Coriander, and one Shredded Beef with Potato and Capsicum.

Two sauces are also available for $1.50. Fresh Guacamole or Romesco which is a roast capsicum sauce.

Innards Pulled Pork with Lime and Coriander Empanada

THM Beef Empanada 110311

Nice tangy flavour works nicely with the pork.

Innards Shredded Beef with Potato and Capsicum Empanada

THM Pork and Lime Empanada 110311

Potato-y.

Smokey Jack’s Menu

THM Morrocan Menu 110311

Happy Smokey Jack Perhaps?

THM Happy Morrocan Storeowner 110311

I would be happy too – knowing that I’m serving people delicious food.

Smokey Jack’s Moroccan Chicken with Couscous and Yellow Spiced Bread $9.50

THM Moroccan Chicken with Couscous 110311

Flavoursome tender chicken chunks with couscous. The bread was amazingly crunchy and I used it to mop up that delicious sauce.

Moroccan Bread $3

THM Moroccan Bread 110311

Stuffed with onion, morroccan spices and ghee.

Turkish Gozleme

THM Gozleme 110311

The many ladies making the Gozleme.

Meat Gozleme $12

THM Gozleme 110311

Not the best. The meat had little flavour and the pastry had little fluff. Most of the goz joints around Perth, also add feta or cheese into the mix and give a slice of lemon.

One of my favourite’s spots for Gozleme is the Subiaco Station Street Markets. The dough is always fluffy and chewy yet light and crispy. Only $9.50.

Dracula Catering Menu

THM Dracula Mici 110311

The cheapest place at the THM. For once, cheapest doesn’t skimp on quality.

Mici $2

THM Dracula Mici 110311

This bursty sausage was served with mustard. It was very tasty.

Braza Churros

THM Braza Churros 110311

A Brazilian churros unlike the spanish churros is filled with your choice of chocolate or caramel.

Freshly Cooked Churros $4 each or $10 for 3

THM Cooked Churros 110311

These are freshly made and straight in the deep fryer they go.

Chocolate Filled Churros

THM Choc Filled Churros 110311

They are then rolled in a tray of cinnamon sugar and then injected with liquid chocolate sauce. I ate all three, that’s how good they are.

Innards Caramel Filled Churros

THM Innards Caramel Filled Churros 110311

Gooey soft dough innards with warm caramel sauce.

Bratwurst to Go $5.50

THM Bratwurst 110311

German sausage topped with onions, tomato sauce and mustard in a soft bun.

Twilight Hawker Markets Perth 2011

THM 110311

It was a great night of eating. Being able to sit down by the steps of Forrest Chase while being entertained by mimes, jugglers and performers while you eat was very enjoyable.

There’s still lots of stores I don’t have room for… but there’s still two weeks left!
